How to Watch Your Own Movies Offline on Apple Vision Pro

Prepare compatible local files, SMB downloads, or Jellyfin downloads for offline movie playback on Apple Vision Pro, including subtitles, storage, Travel Mode, and power.

For a flight or other trip without reliable internet, prepare your movies on Apple Vision Pro before you leave. You have three Lumair routes:

  • Open a compatible file that already lives in the Files app on Vision Pro.
  • Download a compatible video from an SMB server into Lumair before travel.
  • Download a title from your own Jellyfin server into Lumair before travel.

All three routes can play without a network after preparation, but a Files item must actually be downloaded to the headset rather than merely visible through a cloud or server location. SMB and Jellyfin downloads use Lumair’s app-managed storage. The routes store media differently, and subtitles behave differently depending on whether they are embedded in the video file or kept as separate files.

Lumair includes no movies or TV shows. You provide media you own or have the rights to use. Lumair is not affiliated with Jellyfin.

Choose Files, an SMB Download, or a Jellyfin Download Before You Pack

A local-file workflow starts with a compatible media file that you place in Files on Apple Vision Pro. Lumair can open compatible local files through Files. The file remains in the Files location you selected, subject to the storage and file-management behavior of visionOS.

An SMB-download workflow starts inside Lumair after you connect to an SMB server on your local network, sign in, and choose a share. Select a compatible video and download it while the server is reachable. Lumair stores the completed download in app-managed storage and retains the source information needed for retry and playback.

A Jellyfin-download workflow starts inside Lumair after you connect your own Jellyfin server. Select a movie, episode, or season, then download it while the headset has network access. Lumair saves the selected original source file unchanged in app-managed storage. This is separate from using Files as a local media location.

Apple provides file browsing and organization through the Files app on Vision Pro. Use it to locate a local file and manage the files you have placed on the headset. Apple’s Files guide explains the available file-management controls.

Do not treat any of these routes as a direct external-SSD playback workflow. This article covers files stored on the headset through Files and SMB or Jellyfin downloads saved by Lumair.

What Lumair Stores for Offline Playback

A local file, an SMB download, and a Jellyfin download are all available without a network once they are ready, but they are not the same kind of copy.

Local files remain Files-based

When you open a compatible local movie through Files, Lumair accesses that file for playback. Keep the file on the headset until after your trip. If you remove it from Files or move it somewhere unavailable to the app, Lumair cannot use it as the same local source.

This route can suit a small, deliberate travel selection. Check available Vision Pro storage before you transfer or save large movie files. A file’s extension, container, bitrate, codec label, or size does not by itself confirm that it will play. Open the file and play it on the headset before departure.

SMB downloads stay in Lumair’s app-managed storage

When you download a compatible video from SMB, Lumair copies it from the selected share into app-managed storage for offline playback. Lumair retains the saved source information needed for retry and playback, while the completed offline media remains available until you delete it.

Complete the download while Vision Pro can reach the SMB server on the local network. Then disable Wi-Fi and open the downloaded item from Lumair’s Downloads view to verify that playback uses the stored copy rather than the share.

Jellyfin downloads stay in Lumair’s app-managed storage

When you download from Jellyfin in Lumair, Lumair saves the selected original source file unchanged to its own app-managed storage. The download is for offline playback in Lumair. Do not assume that it becomes a separate movie file in Files or that it can be managed like a Files-based copy.

The downloaded item uses headset storage. Confirm that the download finishes before you leave your network. A title that appears in a list but has not completed its download is not ready for a flight.

Jellyfin itself documents client codec support and server transcoding behavior, which can vary by client, source file, and server setup. Lumair’s download behavior is different from server-side conversion: it saves the selected original source file unchanged. Review Jellyfin’s codec support documentation and transcoding documentation when you are diagnosing a server library or source version.

Subtitles: Embedded Tracks Travel With the Download

Check subtitles before you travel, especially when you rely on an SMB or Jellyfin download.

If subtitles are embedded in the selected video file, those tracks remain inside the downloaded media. Select a subtitle track during your preflight test and confirm that it displays as expected.

Separate external subtitle files are different. If an SMB share or Jellyfin library uses a video file plus a separate `.srt`, `.ass`, or other subtitle file, Lumair does not bundle that external subtitle file into the SMB or Jellyfin download. A downloaded video does not gain separate subtitle files during download.

For a local Files workflow, keep the same distinction in mind. A video with embedded subtitles carries those tracks inside the file. A separately stored subtitle file needs its own compatible handling and should be tested with the exact local setup you plan to use.

Do not wait until you are on a plane to find out that your preferred language track is external, unavailable, or rendered differently than expected. Play a scene with dialogue, switch tracks if needed, and verify the subtitle result before leaving.

Prepare Compatible Video Before Travel

Lumair opens compatible local files through Files, connects directly to SMB, and connects to a user’s Jellyfin server. Lumair plays compatible decrypted 2D and 3D Blu-ray ISO disc images but does not open BDMV folders, bypass DRM, or rip discs. Lumair can browse, stream, and download compatible video directly from SMB servers on the local network. It does not claim NFS, DLNA, WebDAV, Plex, or Emby support.

For compatible MP4, MOV, and M4V files that AVFoundation handles, Lumair uses native playback. Apple documents its media playback technologies through AVFoundation, and compatibility still depends on the file itself and the system’s supported media path.

Compatible HEVC MKV files use a remuxed playback path that preserves the original HEVC base video. Lumair may prepare Dolby Vision when it is safe to do so. When it cannot safely prepare Dolby Vision, Lumair uses the source HDR10 base layer. Test the exact file you plan to watch. Dolby Vision labels and HEVC codec names do not guarantee the same result across every profile, encode, or source file.

Lumair also supports compatible H.264 MVC video in MKV. It decodes MVC and converts it on the device to stereo MV-HEVC for the visionOS system player. That conversion lets compatible MVC material play as stereoscopic video through the system playback path. It is not direct MVC playback, and it is not a promise that every MVC MKV will work.

Apple documents the MV-HEVC and spatial-video conversion path in its AVFoundation documentation. Use a full play-test for any 3D title, including image depth, audio, subtitles, seeking, and the portion of the film you expect to resume later.

A Travel Preflight Checklist

Prepare your movies while you still have time to replace a file, fix a server setting, or choose another version.

  1. Choose the storage route. Use Files for a local file already stored on Vision Pro, download the exact SMB file you want from a connected share, or use Lumair’s Jellyfin download feature for a server title.
  1. Check free headset storage. Leave room for every file or download you plan to bring, along with the space visionOS and other apps need.
  1. Use the exact source you want to watch. For SMB, choose the exact SMB file before downloading. If Jellyfin lists multiple versions, select the one you intend to download. A smaller version may be easier to store, while another version may have the audio, HDR, or subtitle tracks you want.
  1. Complete every download before departure. Keep the headset connected to the SMB or Jellyfin server as needed and confirm that each selected title is fully downloaded.
  1. Turn off the network for the test. Disable Wi-Fi after the download completes, then open the movie in Lumair. This checks the offline copy rather than a stream that happens to work on your home network.
  1. Test video, audio, and subtitles. Start playback, seek to another point, select the intended audio language, and select an embedded subtitle track if you need one.
  1. Test your resume point. Stop and reopen the title if you expect to watch it in parts. This gives you a practical check of the behavior you will use during the trip.
  1. Keep a backup title. Bring another tested movie or episode in case your first choice is not the right fit for the flight.

A preflight test matters because playback depends on the complete file and device path. Container names, extensions, file sizes, and bitrate figures are useful descriptions, but they do not guarantee playback.

Account and Server Checks Before You Go

Your SMB share or Jellyfin library remains on your own server. Before travel, confirm that Lumair can connect to the correct SMB server and share or the correct Jellyfin account and library. Complete downloads while that connection works.

Once an SMB or Jellyfin download is complete, playback uses Lumair’s stored copy and does not require a reachable server during the movie. Still, test the downloaded file before departure. The test confirms the title is present in app-managed storage and opens offline on your headset.

If you use local files, make sure you know where the file is stored in Files and avoid deleting it during cleanup. Label mixed travel plans clearly: Files-based titles are managed through Files, while SMB and Jellyfin downloads are managed in Lumair.

Your Lumair purchase follows Apple’s App Store purchase system. If you change devices or reinstall the app, use the app’s restore-purchase option when appropriate. See Lumair Support for current support details.

Use Apple Vision Pro Safely During Travel

Apple documents Travel Mode for passengers on airplanes and other moving vehicles. Remain seated while using it, remove Vision Pro before standing or moving around, and never use it while operating a vehicle or in an environment that requires your attention. Read Apple’s current Travel Mode instructions before your trip.

Set up the movie, subtitle selection, and playback controls while seated. Remove the headset whenever crew instructions or your surroundings require your attention.

Apple also provides controls for watching shows and movies in visionOS. Review the Apple Vision Pro playback guide if you need help with the system viewing experience.

Plan Power Around the Flight

Apple lists up to 3 hours of video playback for Apple Vision Pro with the included battery. That is Apple’s specification, not a promise of how long a particular movie session will last. Your duration can vary with the movie file, playback settings, battery condition, system activity, and other use during the trip.

See the current Apple Vision Pro technical specifications before planning a long viewing session.

Charge the battery before leaving. For a flight longer than Apple’s stated video-playback specification, plan your viewing around available power and airline rules. Do not assume that a full charge will cover a particular movie, double feature, or entire itinerary. Test your usual setup at home if power duration affects your travel plans.

Before You Board

Bring only movies you have the rights to use. Lumair does not include media, bypass DRM, or provide disc ripping. It plays compatible files you open through Files and titles you download from SMB or your own Jellyfin server.

For the simplest offline plan, choose a few titles, store or download them early, confirm embedded subtitles if you need them, test with the network off, charge the battery, and follow Apple’s Travel Mode instructions in the cabin.

Lumair includes a 5-minute playback preview for every video. Full Playback is a $14.99 US one-time purchase, and App Store pricing can vary by storefront.
