Native Apple TV and Files Playback

The Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro plays content from Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, purchases, rentals, and supported provider apps [1]. Content from other providers plays inside those providers' own video apps. Some titles can be downloaded for offline viewing when the option is available for that title.

The Apple TV app also handles Apple Immersive Video and 3D movies [2]. Apple Immersive Video is 180-degree 8K recording captured with Spatial Audio, and you can buy or rent 3D movies from the same app.

Your previously purchased movies and TV shows are available on Apple Vision Pro when you sign in with the same Apple Account [3]. If you bought a title in 2D and it later becomes available in 3D, you can view it in 3D at no extra charge.

Lumair for Compatible Personal Libraries

Compatible Local Files

You can open compatible local media files in Lumair and play them through the visionOS system player. The word "compatible" matters here; Lumair reads the formats it documents support for, not every codec or container.

Direct SMB Shares

Connect Lumair to an SMB server on the local network to browse a selected share, stream compatible video, or download it for offline viewing.

Your Own Jellyfin Library

If you run your own Jellyfin server, Lumair can browse and play the media it hosts. This covers browsing your library and playing media you supply on that server.

Offline Downloads From Jellyfin

Lumair can download a movie, an episode, or a complete season from your own Jellyfin server so you can keep watching away from the network. This is a separate workflow from the Apple TV app downloads of eligible Apple-provider titles. Apple's downloads apply to titles in Apple's catalog; Lumair's downloads apply to media on your own server.

3D and Video Format Compatibility

The table below makes the supported paths and their boundaries scannable. Every path applies to compatible media only. None of these paths is universal, and none covers every codec, container, resolution, or 3D source.

MV-HEVC Spatial Video

MV-HEVC is the format used for spatial video. It is similar to HEVC (H.265), except that it stores the stereoscopic views in separate layers, one for each eye [4]. Apple identifies it as an efficient format for stereoscopic 3D video on Apple Vision Pro, and Lumair plays compatible MV-HEVC directly.

H.264 MVC MKV for Stereoscopic Playback

Lumair can play compatible H.264 MVC video in MKV files in stereoscopic 3D. It does this by converting the video on device for the visionOS system player.

The practical distinction is straightforward. MV-HEVC plays directly, while H.264 MVC in MKV uses Lumair's on-device conversion path to reach the same system player.

Side-by-Side and Over-Under Presentation

Lumair supports side-by-side and over-under spatial presentation for compatible video. These are presentation options for stereoscopic media where the two eye views are arranged within a single frame, either horizontally or vertically. As with the other paths, this applies to compatible video only.

HDR, Dolby Vision, Audio, and Subtitle Expectations

Lumair supports compatible HEVC MKV REMUX playback with HDR10 and Dolby Vision handling. "Compatible" is the operating limit here. Not every HEVC MKV REMUX, HDR10 file, Dolby Vision file, audio track, subtitle format, or device and software combination will play.

Lumair supports compatible embedded PGS and SRT subtitle tracks. For SMB media opened through Lumair's processing path, it can load a nearby sidecar SRT file when the filenames match. This includes compatible MKV, MK3D, WebM, ISO, and recognized SBS or OU video using spatial conversion. Plain MP4, MOV, and M4V native playback does not load sidecar files. Files selected through the system Files picker do not grant access to sibling sidecar files, and Jellyfin downloads do not bundle separate external subtitle files. Audio and subtitle behavior still depends on the exact media, so test the tracks you need within the included playback preview.
