How to Stream NAS and Jellyfin Media to Apple Vision Pro

NAS to Jellyfin to Lumair: How the Connection Works

Lumair supports two routes when your library lives on a NAS:

NAS storage → SMB → Lumair on Apple Vision Pro

NAS storage → Jellyfin server → Lumair on Apple Vision Pro

Jellyfin reads and organizes the media files stored on the NAS, then delivers selected versions to Lumair. Lumair can browse, stream, and download compatible video directly from SMB servers on the local network. It does not claim NFS, DLNA, WebDAV, Plex, or Emby support. Lumair plays compatible decrypted 2D and 3D Blu-ray ISO disc images but does not open BDMV folders, bypass DRM, or rip discs.

For compatible files already stored locally on Apple Vision Pro, use Files instead of a server connection. Jellyfin is useful when you want a browsable library, search, synced playback progress, streaming, and offline downloads from your own server.

Lumair includes no movies or shows. It is not affiliated with Jellyfin. Use it for media you own or are authorized to play.

What You Need for Vision Pro NAS Media Streaming

Set up these parts before connecting:

• An Apple Vision Pro running visionOS.
• Lumair installed on the headset.
• An SMB server on the local network, or a Jellyfin server that can access your NAS-hosted media library.
• For Jellyfin, an account with permission to view the libraries you want.
• A network path from Apple Vision Pro to the selected server.
• Media that is compatible with the selected playback path.

A NAS stores the files. Lumair can connect directly through SMB, or Jellyfin can organize and deliver them through Lumair's Jellyfin connection.

Connect Lumair to Your Jellyfin Server

1. Confirm that Apple Vision Pro can reach your Jellyfin server.
2. Open Lumair.
3. Add your Jellyfin server using its reachable address.
4. Sign in with your Jellyfin account.
5. Open a library and select a title.

After you connect, Lumair supports library browsing, search, playback progress sync, streaming, and offline downloads.

Use the server address that your Apple Vision Pro can reach. If the connection fails, check the address, your sign-in details, and the account's library permissions.

Choose the Right Playback Path

Use this decision tree to identify the path for a title.

• Is the file already on Apple Vision Pro? Open the compatible local file with Files.
• Is the library exposed as an SMB share? Connect Lumair directly to the SMB server.
• Is the library stored on a NAS and managed by Jellyfin? Connect Lumair to your Jellyfin server.
• Do you need playback away from the server? Download the selected movie, episode, or season before leaving the network.
• Does the title use H.264 MVC in Matroska? Lumair can use its MVC-specific delivery and on-device conversion path when the selected version is compatible.
• Is the title another Jellyfin version? Lumair uses Jellyfin's HLS delivery path.

With the Jellyfin route, Lumair talks to Jellyfin and Jellyfin accesses the NAS-hosted library. Direct SMB is a separate supported route.

Jellyfin Delivery Modes and What They Mean

Jellyfin chooses a delivery mode based on the selected file and client requirements. Its server documentation describes these modes:

• Direct Play leaves the file unchanged.
• Remux changes the container while leaving codecs unchanged.
• Direct Stream leaves video unchanged but transcodes audio.
• Transcode converts unsupported video.

For ordinary Jellyfin versions, Lumair requests the selected version through Jellyfin's HLS delivery path. Depending on compatibility, Jellyfin may preserve the video while changing the container or audio, or it may transcode unsupported video. Check the server's active playback information for the specific title.

A compatible selected H.264 MVC Matroska version uses authenticated static byte ranges so Lumair can run its on-device MVC pipeline. This is a separate path for compatible MVC content.

Do not assume a file will Direct Play. Check Jellyfin's active playback information when you need to identify whether the server is remuxing, Direct Streaming, or transcoding.

Diagnose Streaming Problems

Start with the delivery mode, then isolate the source of the issue.

Is Jellyfin Transcoding?

Check Jellyfin's active playback information while the title plays.

• If Jellyfin reports Direct Play, it leaves the file unchanged.
• If it reports remuxing, it changes the container while leaving codecs unchanged.
• If it reports Direct Stream, it leaves video unchanged and transcodes audio.
• If it reports Transcode, it converts unsupported video.

Does the Problem Affect One File or Many?

Test another title from the same library. If one title fails while another plays, compare their containers, video formats, selected audio tracks, subtitles, and HDR metadata.

Does the Problem Affect One Network Path?

Test with Apple Vision Pro close to the server's normal network connection. If playback changes on a different connection, investigate the route between the headset and the Jellyfin server.

Avoid using a fixed bandwidth number as a diagnosis. File bitrate, selected delivery mode, network conditions, and server activity all affect playback.

Does a Selected Audio Track or Subtitle Change Playback?

Select the affected track, then review Jellyfin's playback activity. A track choice can change the delivery mode. Lumair does not promise support for specific audio or subtitle codecs beyond what the selected file, Jellyfin delivery path, and system playback handle.

H.264 MVC, MV-HEVC, HDR10, and Dolby Vision

Lumair handles compatible formats through different playback paths.

Compatible H.264 MVC Matroska

For a compatible selected H.264 MVC file in Matroska, Lumair retrieves authenticated static byte ranges from Jellyfin. Lumair decodes the MVC video on device and converts it to stereo MV-HEVC for the visionOS system player.

MVC does not play directly. Lumair converts compatible MVC content on device before the visionOS system player presents it as stereo video.

Compatible MV-HEVC

Compatible MV-HEVC uses native visionOS system playback.

Compatible HEVC Matroska

Compatible HEVC MKV can be remuxed while preserving its base HEVC video. Whether a specific file uses that path depends on the selected source and playback requirements.

Compatible MP4, MOV, and M4V

Compatible MP4, MOV, and M4V files use native AVFoundation playback.

Dolby Vision and HDR10

Lumair prepares Dolby Vision only when it is safe to do so. If Dolby Vision preparation is not safe, Lumair uses the source HDR10 base layer when that layer is available and safe.

Results depend on the source file, its metadata, the selected version, visionOS, and the Apple Vision Pro playback path. Lumair does not promise Dolby Vision playback for every profile or file.

Download Jellyfin Media for Offline Viewing

Lumair can download selected Jellyfin movies, episodes, and seasons for offline viewing.

A download saves the selected original source unchanged to Lumair app-managed storage. Embedded tracks remain in the downloaded source. Separate external subtitle files are not bundled into the download.

Downloads are scoped to the Jellyfin account that created them. When you sign out, Lumair warns before deleting that account's downloads.

Watch Family Movies on Vision Pro From a Home Server

For a family library stored on a NAS, point Jellyfin at the media folders and connect Lumair to that Jellyfin server. Lumair can then browse the library, search for titles, stream selected versions, sync playback progress, and download supported selections for offline viewing.

Keep the architecture clear when troubleshooting:

1. The NAS stores the media.
2. Jellyfin indexes and serves the library.
3. Lumair connects to Jellyfin on Apple Vision Pro.

If the library does not appear, check Jellyfin's library setup and account permissions. If a title buffers or changes delivery mode, check Jellyfin's active playback information.

Vision Pro Dolby Vision From a Server

Dolby Vision from a Jellyfin server depends on the selected source and its metadata. Lumair prepares Dolby Vision when it can do so safely for the visionOS system player.

When safe Dolby Vision preparation is unavailable, Lumair can use the source HDR10 base layer if the file includes one and that layer is safe to play. A title that does not meet these conditions may follow another compatible playback path or may not preserve Dolby Vision output.
